About Me
Hello! Nice to meet you. My name is Josh and I have been working in the technology industry for over 10 years. I have a background in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. Time flies as sometimes it does not feel nearly that long! My passions for technology developed at a young age. As a geeky teenage kid growing up in a small California town with a welfare family, I had a strong desire to create something more in my life. I saw opportunities to do that with the burgeoning power of the then growing internet. My first interest in skills development were in learning basic computer hacking as a kid with online communities such as hackthissite.org. This community taught me how to have a curious mind. My experience there put me on a journey toward learning web development. I was that guy who was creating the website for his high school and operating a development business as a teenager while also getting into a little adolescent mischief on the side. In the earlier years before my career really started I remember when businesses were still just learning the value of going online. Yes, there was a time when people literally needed to be convinced of the value of being on the internet. Shocking, I know. Nowadays technology is booming! We are in an an epic industrial revolution of intelligence transforming everything in how we work and live. A transformation that is both exciting and scary. As first in my family to go to college, I graduated with a Computer Science degree from the University of California, San Diego in 2015. Most of my course electives were related to studying Artificial Intelligence as that just intuitively seemed like the next step for computing to me at the time.
Currently in my career I am capitalizing on the original skills I developed early on in front-end development as a React Native mobile engineer for Big Tech. My talents and experience also extend beyond this as well. Currently my primary interests are interdisciplinary. I am in the middle of pivoting my specialization to the field of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence applied to the Behavioral Sciences.
Imagine a webcam analyzing a person’s blink rate on a screen and using that along with other aspects of body language to determine a person’s stress levels. You can also imagine a video feed of a group of people with a computer vision system being used to determine how those people in the video are most likely related to each other based on their body language and social context. The possibilities of Computer Vision in the field of Behavioral Science are endless. I have a strong fascination in continually learning what drives decision making for human beings and what it is about our communication that often determines the fate of our personal and professional relationships. These impacts thusly determine the fate of our lives on both microscopic and macroscopic levels.
As a life long learner I am always gaining new skills within my professional field and in other areas of interest. I actively invest in coaching and mentorship to achieve my goals and believe the best investment we can make is always in ourselves. As a proponent of technology democratization, I also believe it is important to tech enable the general population as well. This is due to the tendency of large corporations and governments often making decisions based on their own interests rather than the interests of the general public due to profit incentives and political incentives. I believe technology enables people to enjoy an equal playing field as a counterbalance of power to such incentives which enables many to still enjoy healthier lives with more freedom.
Blockchain and other decentralized technology are also a passive interest of mine. The double spending computer science problem that Bitcoin solved in 2009 was a problem that cypher punks and computer scientists were working on since the internet started gaining popularity in the 1990s. This breakthrough is now creating an evolution in economics and models of trust which has profound implications for the type of infrastructure and automated governance systems we can now build. This coupled with advancements in artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, the internet of things, quantum computing and profound increases in general computing power just has me floored and in complete awe. What we can now create over this next generation of humanity is mind blowing and also scary. As mentioned before geopolitical and global corporate interests often do not align with the general interests of the public and if these seismic shifts of technical revolutions are not accomplished safely and responsibly it is also possible we may see some dire consequences to the health and freedoms of society, government and other institutions. Given my unique background and experience, I care to be a key part of enabling such advancements over the long run with integrity across the board.
I love to think and at the same time also love to have fun! I have a wild side as well and enjoy dancing in the night life of big cities, rave life, burning-man style culture and working out in the gym. Such a lifestyle keeps my health strong and soul feeling alive.
I am also working on a book! Come check it out. It is 11 chapters of learnings I have had in my own self development journey and career over the past decade that I care to share with others.
My mind is also always open for new connections with people who I can learn from, teach and work with. If you are interested in contacting me with questions, comments, suggestions or opportunities send a me note below!
